Simpson at work

It was for his discussions of music – both in print and in sound – that Robert Simpson first came to public notice. This facet of his work stretched throughout his life, and provides the kind of insights that are only available to a creative artist. The musicians and topics covered are legion, and the size varies from a few words to entire books. Simpson’s views are invariably illuminating, invariably valuable, invariably thought-provoking – and sometimes pugnacious. They tell us much about the music and about the art of composition; but they likewise tell us much about Robert Simpson himself.
